This family-run
traditional Irish pub has been providing hospitality to visitors
and locals over the past four generations. Situated in the
centre of Cushendall village in the beautiful Glens of Antrim,
the building was originally a coaching inn and still retains the
character and charm from those by-gone days.
Johnny Joe's enjoyed many fair days and social gatherings in the
last couple of centuries and still has the pleasure, company and
craic from the farmers attending the local sheep sales during
the autumn months. Johnny Joe's is a well known venue in the
traditional music circle and we always look forward to
Cushendall's turn in hosting the County Antrim Fleadh.
The layout is a typical Irish dwelling house which evolved into
a pub, a big old range in the kitchen, an open fire in the
parlour, a yard which has been glazed over and a bottling store
with an open fireplace, which has the original crane and hobs,
used for boiling potatoes for the pigs. These individual rooms
lend themselves to a number of sessions going on simultaneously
which often happens. It would not be unusual to hear a broad
range of music from blues to jazz throughout the year and
possibly even all on the one night.
A memorable night in Johnny Joe's is made up a number of parts,
conversation between locals and visitor, shared tunes, song and
tall tales, all washed down with a good pint of the old black
stuff, where at the end of the night the stranger becomes a new
friend. Many a new acquaintance has been made under this roof
and many a good deal struck.
Like most Irish traditional music lovers we have a taste for all
types of music. We are delighted to facilitate practice sessions
by the young and not so young. Guitar lessons have just started
so if you play an instrument, sing or tell a story or just like
conversation then Johnny Joe's is the place for you. An all
round gem strongly recommended.
